Morphological selectivity of the Permian-Triassic ammonoid mass extinction

چکیده

Abstract Ammonoids suffered a diversity bottleneck during the Permian-Triassic mass extinction (PTME) and experienced rapid diversification in Early Triassic. However, kinds of ammonoids that were more likely to survive PTME fueled subsequent are still poorly known. We compiled comprehensive morphological data set used nonmetric multidimensional scaling method reveal impact on selectivity ammonoids. Our results show postextinction taxa occupied quite different morphospace when compared with pre-extinction assemblages. The survivors mainly smooth weakly ornamented forms, while late Permian species dominated by coarsely forms. Contrary previously recognized nonselective patterns, these suggest crisis. Newcomers Griesbachian compressed This shift from dominating Changhsingian possibly suggests an ecological turnover PTME.

Current perspectives on the Permian–Triassic boundary and end-Permian mass extinction: Preface

The end-Permian mass extinction is now robustly dated at 252.6 ± 0.2 Ma (U–Pb) and the Permian–Triassic (P–T) GSSP level is dated by interpolation at 252.5 Ma. An isotopic geochronological timescale for the Late Permian–Early Triassic, based on recent accurate high-precision U–Pb single zircon dating of volcanic ashes, together with calibrated conodont zonation schemes, is presented. The durati...

Severest crisis overlooked—Worst disruption of terrestrial environments postdates the Permian–Triassic mass extinction

Generally Early Triassic floras are believed to be depauperate, suffering from protracted recovery following the Permian-Triassic extinction event. Here we present palynological data of an expanded East Greenland section documenting recovered floras in the basal Triassic (Griesbachian) and a subsequent fundamental floral turnover, postdating the Permian-Triassic boundary extinction by about 500...

Understanding mechanisms for the end-Permian mass extinction and the protracted Early Triassic aftermath and recovery

Modern study of the end-Permian mass extinction in the marine realm has involved intensive documentation of the fossil content, sedimentology, and chemostratigraphy of individual stratigraphic sections where the mass extinction interval is well preserved. These studies, coupled with innovative modeling of environmental conditions, have produced specific hypotheses for the mechanisms that caused...

Tetrapod distribution and temperature rise during the Permian–Triassic mass extinction

The Permian-Triassic mass extinction (PTME) had an enormous impact on life in three ways: by substantially reducing diversity, by reshuffling the composition of ecosystems and by expelling life from the tropics following episodes of intense global warming. But was there really an 'equatorial tetrapod gap', and how long did it last? Here, we consider both skeletal and footprint data, and find a ...

Boreal earliest Triassic biotas elucidate globally depauperate hard substrate communities after the end-Permian mass extinction

The end-Permian mass extinction constituted the most devastating biotic crisis of the Phanerozoic. Its aftermath was characterized by harsh marine conditions incorporating volcanically induced oceanic warming, widespread anoxia and acidification. Bio-productivity accordingly experienced marked fluctuations. In particular, low palaeolatitude hard substrate communities from shallow seas fringing ...
